Something to Keep
And there is someone out there just like me / Probably keeping to themselves
The Front Bottoms – “Swear to God the Devil Made Me Do It”
A Second Look
Sometimes I come across a piece of writing (it could be a poem, a line in a song, or a quote from a book) and I like it so much that I think to myself: “I’m glad someone took the time to write this down”. Acknowledging this is important because we’re being bombarded with information all the time. Sometimes we think we don’t have time to sit back and appreciate something. We do.
On that note, here’s my favorite piece about writing:
“Why Bother” by Sean Thomas Dougherty
Because right now there is someone
Out there with
A wound in the exact shape
Of your words
Something I Liked
“I’d much rather have a glorious failure than a mild success”, legendary programmer Will Wright says in this amazing Vulture article. Although I was never into The Sims, I remember playing SimCity on the PlayStation and loving it. At the time, I was really into gaming, but I didn’t know who the people behind them were or what making a game implied. I’m glad I eventually took the time to read articles like the one I just mentioned.
While I was doing research, I also realized that The Social Reckoning is coming out soon. For those unfamiliar, this is the sequel to the movie The Social Network. Both films are based on books, and since I wasn’t that familiar with the story behind Facebook’s disturbing problems (which include everything from human trafficking to involvement with drug cartels), I decided to give the book Broken Code a chance.
For those unfamiliar, Jeff Horwitz is the Wall Street Journal journalist who broke the story of the Facebook Files. These were a series of internal documents where Facebook acknowledged that Instagram had a negative effect on teenage girls and that the company protected “high-profile” users, among many other shady things. The story’s fascinating, and I can’t wait to watch that film.
I know that over the last couple of paragraphs, I went from “I love technology, it’s the best” to “I don’t want to live in the modern world”, but that’s exactly how I feel every day. Also, I get the irony that you’re reading this using a device that connects to the internet.
